The Business of Freedom: How Mark Made It Work in East Dallas
I grew up in a small town in Mississippi, went to Ole Miss, I have BBA from Ole Miss and a Masters in Education from Southwestern Seminary. I have lived in Dallas since 1995. I came here for a job as a youth minister and served in a few churches in the area as a youth/college pastor for several years. In 2005, I started an e-commerce business that led into 2009, starting a toner business. I have two awesome kiddos, both married to GREAT GREAT people, love my son-in-law and daughter-in-law, they are amazing!
Q: Please tell us a little bit about your family.
I have two GREAT kiddos, not kids anymore, both married, both live in the area with their amazing spouses, and love who they continue to become!
Q: Please tell us about your current, past, or future career. What do you love most about what you do?
Currently, most sexiest job in the world, selling toner and printers, LOL! What I have loved most about owning my own business? The FREEDOM. When my kids were in MS/HS I did not miss a game and activity and event, I could and do control my own time and that is priceless!
Q: What are a couple of your favorite restaurants in our community?
Ooooo, there are a few! LOVE El Vecino, McRaes, Terilli’s, and White Rock Ale House, mmmmm good!
Q: How long have you lived or worked in our community?
since 1995 so, almost 20 years.
Q: Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in our community?
Oh wow, I met a lot of interesting people. I get impressed with people who have started their own business and grown it exponentially, and there are a lot of those in East Dallas! I have met everyone from former MLB Umpires, CEO’s, CFO’s ,Dr Pepper/Snapple, entrepreneurs, musicians, and artists. Not sure I can narrow it down to one. East Dallas is unique, and you are fortunate to meet many unique people.
Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why?
Europe – would love to go back to England, Scotland, Ireland, and Austria.
Q: What is one of your favorite movies? TV shows?
Movie wise……anything John Wayne, lol, but true! TV shows Blue Bloods.
Q: What advice would you give to people?
JUMP! Try it and take a chance! Don’t let fear hold you back!
Q: What is something on your bucket list?
NBA Courtside tickets, any game, doesn’t really matter, just courtside!
Q: What is your go-to band when you can’t decide what to listen to?
BOSTON
Q: What current or former local business makes you the most nostalgic about our community?
I gotta say, the Case Linda Shopping area, because I remember the Mobil Gas Station on the corner of Buckner and Garland with the flying red horse and the Casa Linda Theatre sign; I loved those places.
Q: If you could choose anyone alive today and not a relative, with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? And where locally would y’all meet for this lunch?
Jordan Peterson, a great writer, speaker, and change-maker. He impacts people’s lives for the better!
Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique about our community?
It feels like its own little town and I love that, I know it’s big, with tons of people, but it has a very friendly small-town feel.
Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years?
Still working, but traveling more, and more time on the lake!
Q: (Even for friends or family), what is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?
I was able to obtain a voice scholarship for college and traveled the world, literally, with that choir!
Q: What is the most beautiful place you have ever been?
Salzburg, Austria
Q: Favorite month? favorite holiday? and best single day on the calendar?
Thanksgiving, favorite time, family time, food, LOVE IT!
Q: What would you rate a 10 out of 10?
A firepit, with scotch and a cigar surrounded by the people I love the most, sitting with me.
Q: Who inspires you to be better?
My mom and dad, both have passed, but how they loved us, treated us, were ALWAYS in our corner! To be more like them, because they were selfless!
Q: How do you ignite kindness in your community?
I try so hard to create authentic relationships to leave a legacy of giving to people and giving simply because!
Q: What is one or two of your favorite smells?
Fresh cut grass, cedar wood burning in my firepit.

Great memories, lots of laughter, family is what matters
